| The University of Toledo is proud to be a partner
institution of the Consortium Ecosystem
Studies Unit (CESU) at the University of Minnesota. The University has
made strategic decisions to build a strong research and education program in
ecosystem studies. This has included the formation of a new department of
Earth, Ecological and Environmental Sciences (EEES) . The University has
invested in new research building to support ecosystem research, has
aggressively hired new research-oriented faculty, and is pursuing other
initiatives to strengthen the program. EEES is working collaboratively with
the College of Engineering to expand multidisciplinary research on ecosystem
research. The new hires and most of the existing faculty have collaborative
experience with federal agencies and have strong records of Competitive
grants and refereed publications.
The University of Toledo is adding unique research facilities to strengthen this collaborative proposal. The Lake Erie Research Center (LERC), for instance, is an interdisciplinary center dedicated to environmental research. The LERC's goal is to assemble, within a single facility, a program in agricultural management, ecosystem studies, environmental chemistry, geography and land use planning, remote sensing, environmental monitoring and terrestrial ecology, and ecosystem management to create a multidisciplinary team exploring the complexity in ecosystem studies and management. LERC was installed with modern labs, teaching labs and research equipment, up-to-date communication setups, and necessary support staff. This research team, along with its other partner institutions, hopes to address some important ecological and environmental issues in the Great Lakes Region.
